Thou shalt not read carried material, look at a screen with moving

I think that electronic devices, for the general public, be they tablets
or phones, should have defaults that cut power over a certain velocity. How
you keep someone from perching a paperback on a steering wheel is beyond me.

I have never yet seen a paper back but I have seen drivers reading
maps, the newspaper, holding babies or small dogs, using the visor
mirror to check or put on lipstick or eye shadow, shave, and even suck
face with their passenger. Best rule there is is to drive safe and
expect the stupid. I was going to add "expect the unexpected" but how
do you expect that which is not expectable?

The strangest I ever saw was a woman using an eyelash curler.
Admittedly, she was stopped @ a traffic light, but still something you don't
see every day.

Is there anything really unexpectable or is it a failure of imagination.
When the Bush administration was whining about not being able to
anticipate anyone flying airplanes into buildings (in spite of the fact that
there were previous such incidents although of smaller scale) I said they
needed to hire a few script writers from Hollywood to think up possible
attacks they need to defend against.

Such a default would be a good idea for drivers, but it would mean people
couldn't use their devices on an airplane either.

And? :^) I think cell phone usage should be relegated to emergencies and
notifications and planning. No yakking. I'm halfway serious.

I almost agree with you. However, in a parked car, or anywhere there aren't
other people around to be annoyed, I think it's okay. I'd be happy to see
no cell phones used on a plane. However, you also included other electronic
devices. I see nothing wrong with using a laptop, a Blackberry, a Kindle or
such on a phone. It can make a long flight less tedious, and can provide a
distraction for a nervous flier.

I pretty much do that. Actually just emergencies and critical
messages. I did start texting though, because that's my
daughter's favorite mode of communication.

For a long time, I never texted. I couldn't;t understand why not just
talk. But my siblings text. So I do, too. And it is best for info such as
directions or dates, as you can refer back to it. I don;t think my phone has
actually ringed with a call in months.

And, one bright side of texting: it is silent.
